National Youth Football League In Trouble
By Richard Miller of The Blitz News
Luke's 2 Year Old Youth League in Trouble! Miami,Florida(USA) If you are a youth football fan and you follow youth football in the Tri-County areas of South Florida then I am sure you must have heard about Luther Campbell's National Youth Football League. If you know anything about south Florida youth football then you must know about the National Youth Football League. Luke has always been a huge football fan so it was not surprising to see him start up his very own youth football league (like Snoop Dogg has in California). Luke built the league with the mission of providing Pop Warner teams and other "inner-city" teams the opportunity to play in a "flashy" and highly competitive league; however, not be stifled with huge expenses to travel to Pop Warner National events. Teams that make it to Pop Warner champions have to come out of pocket lots of cash - were talking thousands of dollars - in the seven figures - to take their team to National competitions. Teams have to play at Pop Warner sanctioned hotels and attended specific venues or be fined! So anyhow Luke wanted teams around the country to follow his league model, which kicked off in South Florida and he later added chapters in Virgina and the DC area. In the first year things looked promising. The league seemed to be the new flavor in the South Florida youth football scene. In addition to that, the league also got a boost from coverage provided by The Blitz News, a niche publication that caters specifically to youth football. This year, after several key board members left the fold - the league has been plagued with financial problems and seem to lose much integrity after the shift of power on their board. Luther Campbell shifted from being the League PR and Marketing force from the league to becoming the President of the League after Chief Gerald Darling vacated the post this year. The season ended on a very rocky note. Teams were clearly not happy with the fact that they could not play complete 10+ game schedules; and when they did they ended up playing the same league teams 2 or sometimes 3 times in the same season. They cried foul and wanted to see a more organized and structured league. Now in the off season they have lost at least 3 teams which has weakened the league in terms of competition. I hear power house Miami Gardens may be heading over to South Florida. West Dade has merged with North Miami Seminoles (another South Florida park) and South Broward has closed up shop! What is left Overtown, Gwen Cherry (who may also go to Pop Warner), Liberty City, Northwest Boys & Girls Club and Talcolcy. Those are the true "inner city" teams that are left! It will be interesting to see how National comes out in 2009 - if that at all!
